BENJAMIN LANGFORD

mixed media artist | United States

Benjamin Langford (b. 1992) was born in Connecticut and spent his childhood across Connecticut, London, and Singapore before attending the Rhode Island School of Design from 2010-2014. His international upbringing has influenced his interest in varied histories and approaches to the representation of nature, and the symbolism behind his frequent subject: flowers. He now lives and works in Brooklyn, NY and has been included in numerous exhibitions throughout the US and internationally. His work consistently pertains to contemporary representations of nature and the hyperreal. His “Flowers” sculptures use digital prints on canvas that are sewn together to create large-scale illusionistic flowers. They explore the ways in which technology brings us closer to nature through increasingly vivid modes of representation, while distorting our sense of the real. They bring the seductive and hallucinogenic qualities of images to attention by reversing the way photographs are ordinarily perceived: they are not windows to be looked through but simulacra that seemingly extend beyond their real dimensions.
